DAVIE, FL – The Amherst College women’s basketball team remained undefeated this afternoon with a 65-62 win over St. Norbert College in day one of the 2008 Florida Sunshine Shootout. The 10-0 Lord Jeffs held a lead as large as 23 points in the second half, but had to hold off a late charge from the Green Knights for the three point win.

Amherst jumped out of the gate this afternoon, on the campus of Broward Community College, shooting a blazing 57% in the first half to build up a large lead over St. Norbert. The Lord Jeffs failed to make a first-half three pointer, but shot 17-for-26 from the rest of the floor to take a 39-25 halftime lead.

The Green Knights struggled from the field in the first half, with just 25% on 7-for-28 shooting. Amherst was able to dominate the boards, especially the offensive glass. The Jeffs held a 43-29 edge overall in rebounding and a 16-8 advantage on the offensive end, helping Amherst to a 17-7 edge in second-chance points.

The second half saw Amherst go more than six minutes without a field goal, and the Green Knights chip away at a large halftime margin. Amherst’s shooting cooled to 27% overall in the second stanza, while St. Norbert warmed up to 58% shooting. The Amherst lead deteriorated throughout the frame, and the Lord Jeffs found themselves with a game on their hands in the final minutes.

The Green Knights closed the gap, but never tied the game or took the lead in the second half. Amherst rode strong performances from senior tri-captains Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, IL) and Shaina Pollack (Great Neck, NY). Reiff paced the Jeffs with 19 points and eight rebounds on 7-of-13 shooting, and 5-of-6 shooting from the foul line.

Pollack chipped in with 14 points and four assists, including both of the team’s three pointers for the day. First-year Sarah Leyman (Cincinnati, OH) was the only other Lord Jeff in double-digits, as she dropped 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting in 25 minutes of action.

Morgan Strasser led St. Norbert with 20 points and five rebounds, while Denise Heuser and Victoria Le Fevre combined for 23 points.

The Lord Jeffs improve to 10-0 with the win, and will face Endicott College tomorrow at 10 a.m. in their final contest of the tournament.
