Sam Swensen Named NESCAC Player of the Week
Sam Swensen was named the Most Valuable Player at the Pioneer Valley Classic.
AMHERST, MA – Amherst College sophomore Samantha Swensen (Rockaway Park, NY) has been named the NESCAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for leading the Lord Jeffs to three victories to keep the team’s perfect season alive. Swensen is the first member of her team to earn the honor this season.
After totaling 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a pair of steals in a 70-65 win over Keene State College to hand the Owls their first loss of the season, Swensen put up stellar numbers at the sixth annual Pioneer Valley Classic en route to the Tournament Most Valuable Player award. Swensen matched her career high of 22 points in only 19 minutes of action Friday night against Westfield State on 77 percent shooting (10-for-13) before adding 10 points against Springfield College the following day.
For the week, Swensen averaged 15.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.0 blocks and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 71.4 percent from the floor (20-for-28) and draining six of her seven free throw attempts. As Amherst’s leading scorer through six games this season, the reigning NESCAC Rookie of the Year is averaging 11.2 points and 6.2 rebounds while playing an average of only 20.3 minutes per game.
The Lord Jeffs return to action Wednesday, Dec. 5 when they travel to face Clark University at 7 p.m.
