Jeffs Defeat Bates, Move NESCAC Win Streak to 30

LEWISTON, Maine – The top-ranked Amherst College women's basketball team defeated Bates College by a score of 75-63 Friday evening, improving to 21-0 on the season while increasing its NESCAC win streak to 30 games.

Amherst (21-0, 7-0 NESCAC) also increased its overall win streak to 40, while the Bobcats dropped to 9-12 overall and 2-6 in conference play. The Lord Jeffs are now 6-0 in their past six games against Bates.

Caroline Stedman ’12 led the Lord Jeffs with 18 points, with Lem Atanga McCormick ’12 adding 17 and Shannon Finucane ’12 scoring 14. Finucane also pulled down a career- and game-high nine rebounds, while Kim Fiorentino ’12 pitched in with nine points and eight boards.

Amherst eked out a 26-17 halftime lead after a cold first period for both teams. The second half was a much different story, with the Lord Jeffs outscoring Bates 49-46. The Bobcats were 18-of-19 from the free throw line in the second half after going 0-for-3 in the first period.

The Jeffs missed all 10 of their three-point attempts in the opening period, but they rallied to shoot 58.6 percent overall in the second half. Amherst led by 23 with 8:14 to play, but the Bobcats closed the game on a 24-13 run.

Meredith Kelly led Bates with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Allie Beaulieu added 12 points and six rebounds before fouling out, and Allaina Murphy contributed 10 points and three steals.

The Lord Jeffs will close out their weekend road trip on Saturday, when they take on Tufts University at 2 p.m. With Amherst standing alone atop the NESCAC standings at 7-0 and Tufts right behind at 7-1, the winner of Saturday’s game will be in the driver’s seat to host the conference championship.
