AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College’s Marcia Voigt ’13 has been named NESCAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for leading the Lord Jeffs to their third consecutive conference title this past weekend.
Voigt averaged 15.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in only 24.5 minutes per game during the tournament’s semifinal and final rounds, shooting 63.2 percent (12-for-19) overall for a pivotal spark off the bench.
In Saturday’s 66-52 win over Colby, Voigt helped Amherst build what proved to be an insurmountable lead by recording 11 of her team’s 19 points during a dominant stretch, as she finished the first half with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting. She led the Lord Jeffs with 17 points, eight rebounds, three assists and a block in the win to put Amherst back in the title game.
The following day Voigt scored 10 second-half points on 4-of-5 shooting to lead the charge as Amherst pulled away from a 24-24 tie at the break. The turning point came when the Jeffs broke a 26-26 deadlock with a 14-0 run, with Voigt accounting for eight consecutive points during that stretch. She finished with 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals in only 23 minutes during the championship game.
In her past five games Voigt is averaging 12.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and a team-best 3.8 assists while shooting 60.9 percent from the floor. The 2010 NESCAC Rookie of the Year has been peaking at the right time for the Lord Jeffs, who will carry a 46-game winning streak into the NCAA Tournament as the defending national champions.
