AMHERST, Mass. – With Amherst College less than a month away from beginning its NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship title defense, senior guard Caroline Stedman (Walpole, Mass.) has been named to the D3hoops.com Preseason All-America Second Team.

Twenty-five players were honored by D3hoops.com, but Stedman is the only NESCAC representative in the group. She also joins Babson’s Nicole Wurdeman ’12 and Sarah Collins ’13 as the only players competing in the Northeast Region to earn All-America recognition.

Stedman has played an integral role in helping Amherst post a 93-6 record with three trips to the national semifinals these past three years. As a sophomore she was named to the All-NESCAC First Team and earned the conference’s Player of the Year award, also garnering All-America status from the WBCA and D3hoops.com.

During last year’s national championship season, Stedman missed three games due to injury and had to work her way back into the starting lineup. She quickly returned to form and earned a NESCAC Player of the Week selection for averaging 22.5 points during dominant performances against Tufts and Bates, notably connecting on all five of her three-point attempts against the Jumbos.

Stedman continued to excel down the stretch and saved two of her best games for last, scoring 18 points against Christopher Newport in the national semifinals before putting up 19 against Washington University in the title game, shooting at 50 percent or better in each contest. Despite recovering from an injury she was named to the All-NESCAC Second Team and D3hoops.com All-Region First Team.

After seeing limited playing time as a first-year, Stedman started in all 33 of the team’s games and averaged 12.3 points as a sophomore. Last year she averaged 10.8 points per contest and shot 41.6 percent from the floor, recording 15 double-digit scoring performances along the way. She currently ranks 17th on the school’s all-time scoring list (791) and is tied for 20th in career assists (141).

Stedman and the Lord Jeffs will begin their 2011-12 season on Saturday, Nov. 19, when they open the Amherst Tip-Off Tournament against Norwich University.

Watch Stedman cut down a piece of the net at the Shirk Center after last year’s win over Washington University in the national title game.
