No. 4 Amherst Cruises to 81-55 Win Over Albertus Magnus

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Four Jeffs scored in double figures on Monday as the fourth-ranked Amherst women's basketball team defeated non-conference foe Albertus Magnus, 81-55 at the Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletic Center.
Amherst improved to 7-0 on the year with the win, while dropping the Falcons to 2-5 overall.
The Jeffs were led by a career day from Marley Giddins '16 with a game-and career-high 19 points on a perfect 8-of-8 from the floor while tying a career-high with 12 rebounds for the double-double. The sophomore guard was also a force on defense and set a new career-high in steals (3). Joining her in double figures were Meredith Doswell '17 with 15 points, Cheyenne Pritchard '16 adding 13 and Ali Doswell '17 dropping 11. Megan Robertson '15 pulled in six rebounds to move into sole possession of ninth place in program history with 601 career rebounds.
Albertus was led by seniors Lianna Carrero and Annie Raucci with 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Tonight’s contest began with back-and-forth scoring until a free throw from Ali Doswell gave Amherst a 17-14 lead with 11:02 left in the half. The Jeffs went on to take a 29-16 lead with a 13-2 run in a span of 3:13.
Amherst led by as much as 15 in the first half with 2:18 left on the clock. Giddins led all scorers at the break with 12 points, while she added six rebounds. For the Falcons, Raucci tallied seven points and six rebounds in the frame.
The Falcons’ lone lead of the contest came at the 12:59 mark of the half as Annie Sutila '15 hit her first three-pointer of the game to give the Falcons a one-point lead.
Amherst shot 44.8% from the floor in the second half and finished the night with a 43.9% showing. The Jeffs also out-rebounded the Falcons 45-31 and tallied 21 second-chance points. They also scored 31 points off of 19 Albertus turnovers.
The Falcons cut the lead to seven in the second half but Amherst answered and went ahead by 28 points with 1:27 left in the contest.
The Jeffs return to the court on Thursday, Dec. 12 to host Bridgewater State at 5 p.m. in their final contest before the holiday break.
