Rhone Tabbed NESCAC Co-Player of the Week

AMHERST, MA – Amherst College senior forward Matt Rhone (Dedham, MA) has been named NESCAC Men’s Ice Hockey Co-Player of the Week for recording five points during a 2-0 weekend that lifted the Lord Jeffs into fourth place in the conference standings.

Rhone combined for two goals and three assists during wins at New England College and Saint Anselm this past weekend. On Friday the Jeffs were tied with New England at 3-3 after two periods, but Rhone scored an unassisted, shorthanded goal that stood up as the game winner 6:11 into the third frame. The next day he had a hand in all four goals during a 4-0 win, assisting on the only goal of the first period, adding two assists in the second period, and scoring five minutes into the third to close out the scoring.

Rhone is the first Amherst player to earn the NESCAC’s weekly honor since Jonathan La Rose was named Player of the Week on Mar. 9, 2009. Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, Rhone leads the Jeffs in goals (10), assists (10) and points (20). Four of his goals have come on the power play, two have been shorthanded, and three have stood up as game winners, all of which are team highs.

Hamilton (9-4-4 NESCAC), Middlebury (9-4-4) and Williams (10-5-2) are tied atop the conference standings, with Amherst (9-5-3) right behind in fourth place. The Jeffs will travel to take on Babson (9-11-3 overall) Friday at 7 p.m. and UMass Boston (14-9) Saturday at 3 p.m., with the NESCAC Championship quarterfinals set to take place the following Saturday.

Sharing Player of the Week honors with Rhone is Trinity goaltender Wesley Vesprini, who led the Bantams to big wins at Bowdoin and Colby by posting a 1.50 goals-against average and .960 save percentage.
