MIDDLETOWN, CT - Led by a pair of goals from junior co-captain Eddie Effinger (Belleville, IL), the Amherst College men's ice hockey team improved to 12-1-0 in its last 13 games against Wesleyan University with a 4-0 victory at Wesleyan Friday evening in the 2010-11 season opener for both teams. Amherst has won its last four games against Wesleyan by a combined score of 19-4, since dropping a 1-0 decision at Wesleyan in November 2008. The Lord Jeffs now lead the all-time series 62-19-4.
Amherst netted a pair of power-play goals in the first period, which would prove to be all the offense the visitors needed. Effinger got things started 6:03 into the period, scoring off a rebound with Wesleyan goaltender Glenn Stowell (Hadley, MA) out of position. Seniors Joe Brock (Cumming, GA) and Luke Arnold (Lincoln, MA) received assists on the play. Amherst added another man-advantage goal at 13:01, with Arnold putting home another rebound in front of the net.
Amherst made it 3-0 just over seven minutes into the second period. Sophomore Dylan Trumble (Calgary, Alberta) again scored off a rebound in front of the net at 7:15, with assists going to sophomore Johnny Van Siclen (Carlisle, MA) and first-year Brian Safstrom (Woodinville, WA). Effinger netted his second goal of the contest with 8:24 gone in the third period, beating Stowell on a breakaway with Amherst playing short-handed.
Senior Cole Anderson (Sylvan Lake, Alberta) stopped all 26 shots he faced in the Amherst net for the shutout win - the fourth clean sheet of his career. Stowell finished with 30 stops for Wesleyan in the loss.
Amherst hits the ice again tomorrow, visiting Trinity College for another NESCAC affair, while Wesleyan hosts Hamilton College in a conference battle. Both games begin at 3 p.m.
