Amherst Rallies for 6-1 Win Over Saint Michael's

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men’s ice hockey fell into a one-goal deficit late in the first period, but responded to score six unanswered goals to hand Saint Michael’s College a 6-1 loss. Amherst improves to 3-2-1 overall with the win, and remains unbeaten in conference play at 3-0-1, while the loss drops the Purple Knights to 3-2-0 overall.

With 3:23 remaining in the first period, Saint Michael’s took a 1-0 lead as Dan Pelletier beat Amherst goaltender Cole Anderson (Sylvan Lake, Alberta) high over his blocker with a backhanded shot. Assists on the Purple Knight’s goal went to Fran Briand and Josh Geary.

Amherst responded to tie the game in the final minute of the opening period, with rookie Andrew Kurlandski (Kirkwood, MO) poking home a loose puck in front of the St. Michael’s net. Senior co-captain Trip Wray (Walpole, MA) and Joe Brock (Cumming, GA) grabbed helpers on the equalizer.

Just 53 seconds into the second period Amherst senior forward Matt Rhone (Dedham, MA) put in a rebound for the eventual game-winner. Sophomore Mike Moher (Toronto, Ontario) and junior co-captain Eddie Effinger (Belleville, IL) assisted on Rhone’s tally.

Junior Mark Colp (Wareham, MA) scored Amherst’s next two goals at the 17:28 mark of the second, and then the 36 second mark of the third, stretching the lead to 4-1. In the final ten minutes of the game, Nick Brunette (Chaska, MN) and Effinger added insurance scores to help seal the win.

Colp finished the day with two goals and an assist, while Moher had three helpers in the win. Anderson finished the game with 19 saves in the win, while Mike Dizgun turned away 28 attempts in net for the Purple Knights.
