The Amherst College men’s hockey team faced off with visiting Salem State College on Saturday afternoon and dropped its first home game of the season, 3-1. With the loss, Amherst falls to 7-4-3 overall while Salem State improves to 9-6.

Amherst took control early on the power play when senior forward Andrew Schremp (Denver, CO) deflected junior defenseman Shane Lennox’s (N. Vancouver, BC) slap shot past the Salem netminder. Rookie forward Luke Arnold (Walpole, MA) also collected an assist on the goal.

The second period saw a bevy of offensive pressure with both teams firing 16 shots on goal. Amherst rookie goalie Jonathan LaRose (Boyle, AB) made a number of stellar saves. Salem State finally knotted the score at 1-1 when Chris Macinnis fired home a shot from the slot. Justin Fox picked up an assist on the goal.

Salem took the lead at the 5:42 mark when Fox fired one home before putting the game on ice at the 11:11 mark when Damen Nisula’s wrister beat LaRose.

LaRose finished with 36 saves and Ryan Hatch made 29 stops for the Vikings.

Amherst returns to action next Friday night when they travel to Castleton State for a 7 p.m. game.
