Jeffs Come up Short at Castleton, Fall 4-2

RUTLAND, VT- The Castleton men's hockey team looked like it would let another game slip from its grasp, but the Spartans finished strong and scored two unanswered goals in the third period to defeat Amherst College, 4-2. Castleton improves to 5-10-1 (3-6-1) and has won two out of the last three. Amherst falls to 7-5-3 (5-3-2) with the loss. The Lord Jeffs play Saturday, traveling to Skidmore for a 4 p.m. face-off.
Castleton took a 2-0 lead early in the second period after a scoreless first. Amherst first-year goalie Cole Anderson (Sylvan Lake, AB) left a rebound in front of the crease allowing Steve Culbertson to put the Spartans up 1-0. Brandon Heck scored five minutes later with a short-handed blast over Anderson's left shoulder to push the lead up to two. Castleton played a strong second period on both ends until the last minute, when the Spartans got caught changing lines. Sophomore Keith Nelson (Manalapan, NJ) scored on a breakaway goal to go into intermission 2-1 in favor of the Spartans.
Amherst evened the game at two just three minutes into the third period with senior Mike McIntosh (Soldotna, AK) scoring on a 2-on-1 breakaway. Kirk Bolduc scored a power play goal thanks to another rebound opportunity for the game winner. Stuart Stefan scored an empty net goal to finish the scoring.
Castleton got a solid defensive effort backed by goalie Jeff Swanson. Swanson made 24 saves and shutting out the Amherst power play, including a two minute 5-on-3 chance in the 3rd period. Anderson made 30 saves in the losing effort.
