AMHERST, MA  - The Amherst College men’s hockey team dropped a critical game at Orr rink on Friday night to ECAC East rival Saint Anselm College, 2-1. With the loss, Amherst drops to 11-7-3 overall and 9-5-2 in the NESCAC, while Saint Anselm moves to 8-10-2 overall and 3-10-2 in the ECAC East.

The Hawks took the lead late in the first period on a power play when Matt Grazioso deflected a shot in front of the net that slid past Amherst rookie netminder Cole Anderson (Eckville, Alberta).

Saint Anselm took a two-goal lead with six minutes left in the second session. After Amherst failed to convert during a 5-on-3 advantage, the Hawks took the momentum and Grazioso tucked home his second goal of the evening off feeds from John Hennessey and Seth Goodrich. Amherst got on the board when junior defenseman Jeff Landers (Hanover, MA) ripped a slap-shot that junior forward Will Collins (Edina, MN) deflected into the net.

The Jeffs were unable to knot the score in the final frame despite Anderson’s 42 saves. Pat Gallagher made 45 saves for the Hawks.

The Jeffs return to action tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. when they welcome 15th-ranked New England College.
