Jeffs Return to Action with 4-1 Win Over Fitchburg State

Sophomore Cole Anderson made 17 saves and allowed only one goal to earn the win.
SOUTH BURLINGTON, VT – In the second game of the Saint Michael’s College Men’s Ice Hockey Holiday Classic, Amherst College (4-2-1/2-1-1 NESCAC) handed Fitchburg State College (5-5-0/2-2-0 ECAC Northeast) a 4-1 loss Friday evening at Cairns Arena in South Burlington.

For Amherst, sophomore Matt Rhone (Dedham, MA), senior Will Collins (Edina, MN), sophomore Luke Arnold (Lexington, MA) and junior Ted Vickers (Chilliwack, BC) tallied a goal and an assist each. Senior Joel Covelli (Carlisle, ON) and first-year Eddie Effinger (St. Louis, MO) added an assist each, while sophomore Cole Anderson (Eckville, AB) set 17 shots aside.

The Lord Jeffs struck first with 4:43 left in the opening period when Collins and Vickers found Rhone for his third goal of the season. Halfway through the second frame, Collins netted his first score of the season with the assist coming from Rhone, to give Amherst a two-goal lead.

The Lord Jeffs notched their third goal 11:01 into the third period, when Covelli and Effinger assisted on Arnold’s second goal of the season. Fitchburg State got on the board at the 17:40 mark of the final period when Thomas McAleer and Kris Threlkeld assisted on Andrew Hutton’s sixth goal of the season. Amherst then added its second goal of the period with 1:06 left in regulation, when Vickers tallied his second goal of the season, coming from Arnold.

Amherst is 3-0-1 in its last four games after starting the season at 1-2-0. Saint Michael’s takes on Fitchburg State Saturday at 4 p.m., while Nichols goes up against Amherst at 1 p.m. on the final day of the Saint Michael’s College Holiday Classic.
