Jeff Landers Named NESCAC Player of the Week
AMHERST, MA – Amherst College senior captain Jeff Landers (Hanover, MA) has been named the NESCAC Men’s Ice Hockey Player of the Week for leading the Lord Jeffs to a pair of conference wins this past weekend. Landers recorded six points for the second consecutive week to become the conference leader in defenseman scoring.
After earning NESCAC Co-Player of the Week honors for recording six points last week, Landers scored two goals and added four assists as Amherst continued to roll by extending its winning streak to six games. On Friday in a 4-2 win over Colby, Landers played a part in every Amherst score with two goals and two assists. He followed on Saturday during a 4-3 overtime victory over Bowdoin, assisting on the game’s first goal and on the game-winner in overtime.
Landers leads the Lord Jeffs in points (7-21-28) and is the conference leader in assists (21), defenseman scoring and power play points (2-15-17). In his last 10 games the senior captain has 24 points on five goals and 19 assists, as he has been held to less than two points in a contest only twice during that stretch.
After finishing fifth in the NESCAC in defenseman scoring in each of the last two years, Landers has already eclipsed his previous career highs in goals, assists and points. An All-Conference Second Team selection from a year ago, Landers has amassed 21 goals and 63 assists for 84 points in his career.
As winners of nine of their last 10 games, the Lord Jeffs (14-4-1, 12-2-1 NESCAC) moved up in the national rankings earlier this afternoon, with Amherst landing in the No. 12 spot in the USCHO.com Division III Poll. Amherst is tied with Middlebury atop the conference standings, with the Jeffs and Panthers scheduled to meet Friday, Feb. 20, in a pivotal matchup. Landers and his teammates return to action Friday, Feb. 13, when they head to Saint Anselm for a 7 p.m. game.
