Amherst Stays Hot with 4-3 Win at Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, NH - The twelfth-ranked Amherst College men’s ice hockey team handed Saint Anselm College a 4-3 ECAC East loss this evening at Sullivan Arena. The loss drops the Hawks to 8-12-1 overall and 5-10-1 in ECAC East play, while the win propels the Lord Jeffs to 15-4-1 overall and 13-2-1 in NESCAC/ECAC East action.

The first period had a total of five goals, including two within the first 47 seconds by the Lord Jeffs. Off the opening face-off Amherst forward Matt Rhone (Dedham, MA) beat Hawk goaltender Kevin Fairweather. Thirty-seven seconds later, Brendan Powers (Walpole, MA) took a pass from Joel Covelli (Carlisle, ON) to make it 2-0.

The Hawks cut the lead in half on a goal from sophomore forward Ryan Butler, who beat Lord Jeff goalie Jonathan La Rose (Boyle, AB) to make it 2-1. At the 16:30 mark, Mike Baran (Duxbury, MA) extended the lead to 3-1.

Off the next face-off sophomore forward Coleman Noonan took a pass from Joe Fernald and Michael Adams and beat La Rose top shelf to make it 3-2 heading into the second period.

After the break Amherst controlled the period by out-shooting the Hawks 13-4 and scoring the lone goal of the stanza by Luke Arnold (Lincoln, MA), which was shorthanded and at the 12:47 mark.

In the final period the teams managed a combined 26 shots, but the Hawks had the lone goal of the period by sophomore forward Paul Snell on the power play after the Hawks pulled Fairweather for the six-on-four advantage.  After that the Hawks pulled Fairweather again, but could not grab the equalizer as they skated to the 4-3 loss.

Fairweather made 37 saves in the losing effort, while La Rose set aside 25 shots in the win. Amherst will play at New England College tomorrow at 4 p.m.
