Jeffs Defeat Wesleyan 3-0 in Douglas Roberts Consolation Game at Conn College

Jonathan La Rose picked up the shutout win against Wesleyan.
NEW LONDON, CT – The Amherst College men’s ice hockey team used a trio of third-period goals to defeat Wesleyan University 3-0 in the consolation game of the 2008 Douglas W. Roberts Tournament. The Lord Jeffs improved to 2-2-0 with the win, while the Cardinals drop to 1-3-0.

Despite holding a commanding 34-11 edge in shots over the first two periods, the Lord Jeffs were unable to sneak a puck by Cardinal goaltender Mike Palladino. Sophomore stopper Jonathan La Rose (Boyle, Alberta) held up his end in net for Amherst, stopping every Cardinal attempt in the opening periods.

In the third period, Amherst senior captain Jeff Landers (Hanover, MA) found classmate Keith Nelson (Manalapan, NJ for the game’s opening score, and ultimately the game-winner. Nelson put a backhander past Palladino 11:49 into the third period.

Amherst needed just three and a half minutes before finding the back of the net for an insurance tally. Sophomore Matt Rhone (Dedham, MA) picked up the assist on a goal by junior Ted Vickers (Chilliwack, BC).

Late in the final period, senior Joel Covelli (Carlisle, ON) and Andrew Stevenson (Newton, MA) grabbed the helpers on Amherst’s third score, with sophomore Luke Arnold (Lincoln, MA) scoring his first of the season. Seven different players for the Lord Jeffs picked up a point in the win.

La Rose finished with 20 saves in the game for the shutout win, improving to 2-0 on the year, while Palladino falls to 0-2 despite making 50 saves for Wesleyan,

Amherst will host St. Michael’s and Norwich University next weekend at home, with St. Michael and the Jeffs dropping the puck Friday, December 5 at 7:00 p.m.
