SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The tenth-ranked Amherst College men’s hockey team remained deadlocked with Saint Michael’s College after two periods, but the Lord Jeffs pulled away in the third for a 4-1 win in a non-conference tilt on Saturday at Cairns Arena. Amherst improved to 10-4-2 with the win while the Purple Knights fell to 4-12.
Mike Cashman ’15 notched a goal and an assist for Amherst, while juniors Christopher Finch and Andrew Kurlandski and first-year Patrick Arena each finished with a goal. Dave Cunningham ’16 made 19 saves in net for the Jeffs.
After a scoreless first period, William Côté ’15 tallied with 5:09 remaining in the second frame on an assist by Josh Geary ’13 to lift Saint Michael's to a 1-0 advantage. Cashman evened the contest at 1-1 when he scored unassisted 2:02 later for his first goal of the season.
Heading into the third deadlocked, Amherst quickly took over as Arena and Finch converted markers 1:59 and 3:13 into the frame, respectively, both finding the back of the net for the first time on the year. Brandon Hew ’13 assisted Arena’s strike while Cashman earned a helper on Finch’s along with Brendan Burke ’16, who tallied his first points of the year as well.
Kurlandski netted the contest's final goal with 3:46 left to play in regulation on an assist from Mike Rowbotham ’15, the sophomore’s team-leading 12th helper of the year.
Amherst returns to Orr Rink and conference play next weekend, beginning with a 7 p.m. contest against Wesleyan on Friday, Jan. 25.
