SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Senior defenseman Brandon Hew picked up first team All-NESCAC honors, while forward Johnny Van Siclen ’13 garnered second team praise after helping the Amherst men’s hockey team to a 15-7-3 overall record and a 14th-consecutive conference tournament berth.
One of the team’s co-captains, Hew leads the league’s second-ranked scoring defense (2.08), which also sits tied for fourth nationally on the penalty kill (88.5). Shutting out its first three opponents, the Amherst defense held teams to one goal or less on nine occasions, finishing the season with four clean sheets.
Not allowing a power play goal over its first five games, the Jeffs held their opponents to an 0-for-24 clip on the man advantage. During a month-long, nine-game stretch beginning in mid-January, Amherst’s penalty kill again stood tall, surrendering just one power play goal in 26 opportunities.
Posting a career-high six assists, Hew closed out the season with a personal-best seven points. During his four years in Purple & White, the blue liner amassed 22 points on four goals and 18 helpers.
Developing into one of the league’s top forwards, Van Siclen led the team in scoring, ranking sixth in the NESCAC in points (26). Netting three goals and three assists in his first four games, the winger found the back of the net in 11 of the team’s contests, while factoring into the scoring in 19 outings.
Tied for fourth in the conference in goals (14), he had three multi-score efforts in 2012-13, finishing his career with six multi-goal games, including a pair of hat tricks. Registering just four assists over his first two seasons, Van Siclen has blossomed into one of the squad’s top scoring threats, tallying 24 goals and 20 assists since his junior year, including a personal-best 14 goals and 12 helpers this season.
