HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior forward Chris Menard scored the game’s only goal with 27 seconds left in the third period to lead Trinity to a 1-0 victory over the Amherst men’s hockey team on Williams Rink in the Koeppel Community Sports Center.
With the win, Trinity improves to 4-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the NESCAC, while the Lord Jeffs, ranked No. 8 in the nation, drop to 4-2-1 (3-1-0 NESCAC) after suffering their first loss to the Bantams since 2009-10.
Junior Ben Coulthard, who recorded a shutout in net with 44 saves, turned away double-digit shots in each period, but was matched by Amherst senior Nathan Corey for 59-plus minutes.
Menard finally broke through when he wristed the puck past Corey while streaking from left to right in front of the net from 12 feet away during a Bantam power play. Trinity’s Jordan So ’13 and Jim Burt ’16 assisted on the tally.
Corey totaled 37 saves including 20 in the second stanza and a denial of Trinity junior forward Will Gray on a breakaway midway through the third period. Amherst nearly scored short-handed tally later in the third, but Coulthard make quick stops on consecutive shots by Andrew Fenwick ’15 and Jake Turrin ’15. The Bantams killed off a penalty in the final five minutes prior to winning the game with the extra skater.
Amherst, which finished with a 44-37 shot advantage including a 17-10 margin during the final frame, returns to action on Friday, Dec. 7 at Williams.
