Jeffs Cruise to 5-1 Win Over Elmira

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Brian Safstrom ’14 and Topher Flanagan ’16 netted a pair of first period goals just 1:16 apart to spark the 11th-ranked Amherst men’s hockey team’s 5-1 victory over Elmira College (5-7-0) at the 2012 Buck Supply and Hynes Electric Cardinal Classic Tournament at Stafford Ice Arena.
With the win the Jeffs (6-3-1) advance to face the winner of Wesleyan and host SUNY Plattsburgh in Saturday’s championship game scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Soaring Eagles controlled much of the play through the first six minutes before Safstrom tapped the puck past senior goaltender Darren MacDonald at the 7:44 mark of the first. Moments later, Flanagan took a feed from Nick Brunette ’13 to make it 2-0. Hoping to keep pace, Mark Morikawa ’13 put Elmira on the board at 12:49, burying a give-and-go with Brian Depp ’16.
Johnny Van Siclen ’13 tallied his sixth of the year on an Amherst power-play at 8:02 of the second period with a setup from Mike Moher ’13 and Conor Brown ’16. Thirty-two seconds later, Dylan Trumble ’13 deflected senior James Hawkrigg’s shot from the blue line to extend the margin to 4-1.
Daniel Merenich ’15 wrapped up the scoring with an unassisted insurance goal at 10:22 of the third.
Amherst held a 39-32 advantage in shots on goal, while going 1-for-3 on the power play. Elmira went 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
Dave Cunningham ’16 made 31 stops for the Lord Jeffs, improving to 2-0-1, while MacDonald turned away 34 shots in the loss.
