Jeffs Drop a 5-2 Contest Against Colby

deutschHAMILTON.jpgWATERVILLE, Maine - Colby College scored the final four goals of the game and held Amherst College without a goal for nearly 45 minutes to earn a 5-2 New England Small College Athletic Conference men's hockey win Friday night at Alfond Rink.

The Mules move to 6-4-3 overall and 3-3-1 in the NESCAC, while Amherst drops to 7-4 overall and 5-2 in the league. Colby, now tied for fourth in the league with Middlebury and Bowdoin, will host Hamilton College at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Jeffs, second in the league, play at Bowdoin at 4 p.m. Saturday.

The Jeffs opened the scoring just 1:57 into play on a goal by Andrew Fenwick '15 from Ryan Edwards '14 and Aaron Deutsch '15.

The Mules tied it at 1-1 at 5:26 of the first when Ben Chwick '14 scored his eighth of the year on a pretty goal. After a face-off win, assistant captain Brendan Cosgrove '14 faked a shot from the point to get a defensemen down. He quickly found Jack Bartlett '14 near the goal line and his pass went to Chwick for the score.

Amherst took a 2-1 lead at 15:21 of the first period on a power play goal by Brendan Burke '16. Deutsch and Topher Flanagan '16 had assists on the play.

Colby started its comeback less than a minute later at 16:04 on sophomore Tyler Lingel's goal off passes from first-year forwards Devin Albert and EJ Rauseo.

The Mules took the lead for good at 12:34 of the second period when Albert and Rauseo combined again. Albert scored on a tap-in after Rauseo had pulled up on a rush. Alex Walsh started the play and had the other assist.

Colby made it 4-2 after two periods when senior captain Nick Lanza scored his eighth of the season at 17:08 from Bartlett and Chwick.

The Mules added an empty net goal with one minute to play from Lingel

Sam Parker '15 made 24 of his 29 saves in the opening two periods for Colby. Dave Cunningham '16 made 27 stops for the Jeffs.
