Jeffs Cruise Past Wesleyan, 4-1

AMHERST, Mass. – Ryan Edwards ’14 scored two goals on Sunday to lead the 13th-ranked Amherst men’s ice hockey team to a 4-1 win over NESCAC rival Wesleyan at Orr Rink.
With the win, the Jeffs have now won four straight to open the 2013-14 season as they hold sole possession of first in the league standings. Wesleyan is now 2-2-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the NESCAC following the loss.
It didn’t take Amherst long to get on the board as Erik Hansen ’14 connected with the back of the net in just over two minutes of play to take an early 1-0 lead as Theo Hannah ’16 registered his first assist of the game.
Wesleyan retaliated just four minutes later as Tommy Hartnett ’14 recorded the equalizer with Elliott Vorel ’17 and Keith Buehler ’14 contributing to the score.
The Jeffs weren’t finished scoring in the first period, however, as Edwards tallied the game winner at the 16:01 mark. Hannah notched his second assist of the game on the play and Patrick Arena ’16 was credited with one as well.
Amherst tacked on two insurance tallies in the second and third period as Andrew Kurlandski ’14 and Edwards scored, respectively. Kurlandski’s goal was assisted by Kevin Ryder ’16 and Elliot Bostrom ’14 and Edward’s second score was assisted by Andrew Fenwick ’15 and Jake Turrin ’15.
The Jeffs held a 32-25 advantage in shots while goalie Dave Cunningham ’16 recorded 24 saves. Dawson Sprigings ’17 tallied 28 saves between the pipes for the Cardinals.
Amherst returns to the rink Tuesday, Nov. 26 for a 4 p.m. game against St. Michael’s.
