Hanlon Named NESCAC Player of the Week
AMHERST, MA – The New England Small College Athletic Conference named Amherst College junior forward Courtney Hanlon (Fullerton, CA) its Women’s Ice Hockey Player of the Week this afternoon for her outstanding play during another undefeated week for the top-ranked Lord Jeffs. After posting a 2-0-1 record last week, Hanlon and the Lord Jeffs have an 11-1-4 record overall and lead the NESCAC with a 7-0-3 conference mark.
On Wednesday night, Hanlon and the Lord Jeffs avenged their only loss of the season with a 3-1 win at No. 2 Elmira College. The win improved Amherst’s record to 10-1-3 on the year, with a 2-1 loss to the Soaring Eagles on Jan. 4 standing as the only blemish on an otherwise undefeated season. During the win at Elmira, Hanlon scored a second-period goal to tie the game at 1-1, adding an empty-netter in the final moments of the game to seal the 3-1 win.
Over the weekend, Hanlon helped Amherst extend its NESCAC regular-season unbeaten streak to 52 games with a win and a tie against visiting Hamilton College. In a 5-0 win over the Continentals on Friday night, Hanlon once against scored the team’s first and third goals, with her first-period tally standing as the game winner. The following afternoon, Hamilton rallied from a goal down on three occasions to skate to a 3-3 overtime draw at Amherst. Hanlon assisted on the third Lord Jeff tally with just 12 seconds to play in the second period, sending Amherst into the second intermission with a 3-2 lead.
For the week, Hanlon scored four goals with one assist, bringing her season totals to 10 goals and four assists for 14 points. Hanlon has scored a team-leading four power play goals and has the team’s only short-handed goal to go along with a pair of game winners. Hanlon ranks second in the NESCAC in goal scoring this season as well.
Amherst will return to action this weekend when it travels to Maine for a pair of NESCAC games at Colby College. Friday night’s game is scheduled for 7 p.m., with a rematch slated for 3 p.m. on Saturday.
