MIDDLETOWN, CT - The defending national champion Amherst College women’s hockey team (1-0-0) rolled to an 8-0 victory over Wesleyan University (0-1-0) in both teams' season opener Friday night. Amherst remained unbeaten in its last 43 NESCAC regular-season games with the win and extended its winning streak against Wesleyan to 12 games.
Amherst wasted no time getting started as first-year Megan Doyen (Ortonville, MI) opened the scoring just 2:33 into the first period. Doyen fired a one-timer past the glove of Wesleyan goalkeeper Ashleigh Corvi for a 1-0 Amherst lead, with sophomore Ellen Swiontkowski (Minnetonka, MI) and senior Kirsten Dier (Appleton, WI) recording assists. Amherst added a pair of goals in the second to expand its margin to 5-0, the first coming off the stick of junior Megan Curry (Shorewood, MN) at 6:31 and the second from junior Courtney Hanlon (Fullerton, CA) at 13:02. The Lord Jeffs made it 6-0 early in the third, as senior Kate Dennett (Highlands Ranch, CO) scored on a delayed penalty. Senior Michelle McGann (New Berlin, WI) added a slap shot from the point for a 7-0 lead with 2:35 left in the period, and Curry provided the final margin, lighting the lamp with 21 seconds remaining for her second tally of the night.
Corvi finished with 59 saves in the Wesleyan net as Amherst held a 67-6 edge in shots on net. Junior Caroline Hu (Cerritos, CA) stopped all six shots she faced in the Amherst net for her sixth career shutout. Both teams are back on the ice Saturday at 3:00 at Wesleyan to complete their two-game NESCAC series.
