Fisher's Two Goals Lead Amherst to 5-3 Win at Conn. College

Josie Fisher scored two goals in the win at Conn. College.

NEW LONDON, CT – The 5th-ranked Amherst College women’s ice hockey team scored a pair of power play goals 1:16 apart at the beginning of the second period to build a 3-1 advantage and went on to defeat Connecticut College 5-3 in a NESCAC game played at Dayton Arena Saturday.

The Lord Jeffs improve to 6-3-2 (5-0-1 NESCAC) with the win, while the Camels fall to 5-7-0 with a 3-5-0 mark in conference action.

Junior Josie Fisher (Norwich, VT) scored a pair of goals to lead Amherst, while classmate Ellen Swiontkowski (Minnetonka, MN) chipped in with a goal and an assist. Senior net-minder Caroline Hu (Cerritos, CA) stopped 18 shots for the winning side.

Seniors Celia Medeiros and Brigid O'Gorman and sophomore Caroline Corbett all scored goals for the Camels. Amy Leichliter finished with 39 saves for Connecticut College.

Fisher made it a 3-1 game with her goal at 2:29 of the second on assists from senior Stephanie Clegg (Woburn, MA) and Swiontkowski.

But O'Gorman got one back for the Camels at 8:22 of the middle period to make it a one goal game. Less than a minute later, the Camels nearly tied the game when Courtney Dumont went to her backhand for a shot, but Hu was able to make the save for the Lord Jeffs.

The Jeffs out-shot the Camels 20-6 in the second period and Fisher added an insurance goal at 5:11 of the third period, as Amherst was able to hold on for the 5-3 victory.

Amherst will host Utica College Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. game at Orr Rink.
