#6 Amherst Advances at Classic with Shoot-Out Win Over #3 Cardinals
Courtney Hanlon tied the game with 2:25 to play, then
scored the clinching goal in the shoot-out for Amherst.

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – With a two-man advantage and 2:25 to play in regulation, Amherst College’s Courtney Hanlon (Fullerton, CA) netted her sixth goal of the year to send the first women's hockey game of the 2011 Cardinal-Panther Classic into overtime. After a scoreless overtime period, the 6th-ranked Lord Jeffs went on to edge #3 Plattsburgh State in a shootout, 2-0, to advance to Monday’s championship game.
Plattsburgh State's Steph Moon took a feed from Allison Era to break the scoreless tie 4:16 into the third period. With less than four minutes to play, Plattsburgh’s lead was jeopardized late in the period as the Cardinals took two penalties within a minute.
Amherst’s Ellen Swiontkowski (Minnetonka, MN) and Stephanie Clegg (Woburn, MA) were credited with assists on Hanlon’s game-tying goal.
Hanlon and Geneva Lloyd (Calgary, CA) beat Plattsburgh goalie Mandy Mackrell in the shootout, securing Amherst’s spot in the championship game. Caroline Hu (Cerritos, CA) turned away the first two Cardinal penalty shots in the exchange to clinch the win. Mackrell recorded 25 saves for the Cardinals. Amherst goaltender Caroline Hu had 22 stops for the Lord Jeffs.
The Lord Jeffs will take on Elmira College tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the tournament championship game.
