From a Castleton Release

RUTLAND, VT – The Castleton women’s hockey team is still looking for their first win of the semester as the Spartans were shut out by Amherst College, ranked 7th in the nation, 8-0. First-year Caroline Hu (Cerritos, CA) made 17 saves while earning the shutout victory.

The Lord Jeffs got on the board just over a minute into play when reigning NESCAC Player of the Week Kate Dennett (Highlands Ranch, CO) scored a short-handed goal.  Dennett got her second goal of the game later in the period, this time on a power play opportunity. Amherst netted four goals in the second to push the lead up to 6-0, all on Castleton goalie Vanessa Carter.  Kalla Robb replaced Carter in the third period, giving up the final two goals of the game.

Carter made 27 saves in the first two periods while Robb stopped 18 in the third for a combined total of 45 for the Spartans in defeat.

Castleton falls to a record of 3-7-3 on the season.  The Spartans return to play Saturday, Jan. 19 when they host Salve Regina for an ECAC East game at 2 pm.  Amherst travels to fourth-ranked Elmira College Friday, Jan. 18 where it will test its 8-3-2 (6-0-2 NESCAC) record. Amherst has now won three straight games, out-scoring opponents 19-1 during that stretch.
