Amherst Kicks Off Season with 4-1 Win Over Colby

Junior Michelle McGann's goal in the first period proved to be the game-winner.
AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College women’s ice hockey team opened its 2008-09 season with a 4-1 win over Colby College, increasing its unbeaten streak against NESCAC opponents to 33 games, the longest such streak in the conference’s history. The Lord Jeffs will host Bowdoin College Saturday at 3 p.m. to wrap up the weekend.

Amherst used first-period goals from senior Anna MacLean (Edina, MN) and junior Michelle McGann (New Berlin, WA) to jump out to an early 2-0 lead that the Jeffs would carry into the first intermission, but Colby cut its deficit in half midway through the second stanza on a power play goal from Laura Anning. Anning’s goal would be the only time the Mules converted on a power play, as Amherst was able to shut down the visitors on their other seven chances.

The Jeffs bounced right back to score another two goals before the second period’s end, with MacLean tallying her second before sophomore Brittney Evans (Edina, MN) gave her team a 4-1 cushion. Neither team could find the back of the net in the third period, as Amherst held on for the 4-1 win in what was a rematch of last year’s NESCAC Championship finals.

Lacey Brown made an impressive 42 saves for the Mules (0-1-0/0-1-0 NESCAC), while junior Krystyn Elek (Summerville, SC) stopped 19 shots for the Jeffs (1-0-0/1-0-0 NESCAC). Amherst will host Bowdoin Saturday in a rematch of last year’s NESCAC quarterfinals.
