WATERVILLE, Maine – One night after handing host Colby College a 10-1 drubbing, the Amherst College women’s hockey team barely escaped their weekend in Maine unscathed as the Mules battled the Lord Jeffs down to the final seconds of a 2-1 Amherst win at Alfond Rink on Saturday.

After Amherst’s (7-4, 5-1 NESCAC) big offensive night Friday, the Mules (4-7, 0-6 NESCAC) had a 30-20 shot advantage Saturday and nearly tied the game with two good opportunities in the closing seconds.

Amherst goaltender Kerri Stuart ’14 was the difference, however, stopping 29 shots and coming within 2:04 of earning the shutout.

After two scoreless periods of play, the Jeffs struck first on a power play goal at 2:56 of the final period. Ashley Salerno ’14 picked up the assist on the goal when her shot from between the circles was tipped in by Megan Doyen ’13.

Doyen then had an assist on Amherst's second goal when her shot was saved by Colby goalie Brianne Wheeler, but a big rebound came out to Tori Salmon ’15. She scored her third of the season when her shot eluded a diving Wheeler.

Colby forced a turnover on the left side and Annie Papadellis had a perfect centering pass to Megan Fortier, who was skating hard to the goal. Fortier ripped a low shot to the right corner with just 2:04 left in the game.

After both teams took a timeout with 9.7 seconds left, the Mules won two straight face-offs and had good chances to tie the game.

Wheeler finished with 18 saves for Colby.

Amherst hits the road again next weekend for a pair of games at Middlebury College, beginning with a 7 p.m. tilt on Friday, Jan. 11.
