AMHERST, Mass. – Four different Jeffs scored on Friday night as the 10th-ranked Amherst women’s ice hockey team claimed a 4-1 win over Colby at Orr Rink.
With the win, the Jeffs (7-2-2, 4-0-1 NESCAC) have increased their winning streak against their conference foe to nine straight while dropping the Mules to 4-5-1 overall and 2-3-0 in league play.
After a scoreless first period, Madeline Tank ’15 deflected a shot from Caitlyn Ryan ’17 that snuck past Colby goalie Brianne Wheeler ’14 to put the Jeffs on the board at the 11:55 mark of the second period during a power play opportunity. Ryan and Eileen Harris ’16 were credited with assists on the play.
Four minutes later, during another power play, all five Jeffs on the offensive attack touched the puck before Emily Flom ’15 tacked on the eventual game winner off a rebound from Tank to put Amherst up by two. Harris also earned an assist on the play to mark her second of the day.
Within seven minutes into the third and final period, Sara Culhane ’17 added another score to increase the Jeff lead to three. It marked her fourth goal of the season.
The Mules cut the margin to two with under six minutes remaining in regulation when Maddie Dewhirst ’16 broke up the shutout. However, the deficit was too large to overcome as Amherst tacked on an empty netter from Anne Gillard ’15 with seconds remaining to claim the 4-1 win.
Amherst capitalized on their power play opportunities and went 2-for-4 while the Mules finished 0-3. Jeff goalie Kerri Stuart ’14 earned the win with 29 saves and is now 6-2-1 on the year. Wheeler made a staggering 52 stops between the posts in the losing effort.
The Jeffs return to the rink tomorrow, Jan. 11 for the second game of a two-game series against Colby at Orr Rink. The puck is scheduled to drop at 3 p.m.
