Amherst Defeats Colby, 2-1

AMHERST, Mass. – The 10th-ranked Amherst women’s ice hockey team scored two goals in the first period and held on for a 2-1 win over Colby College in NESCAC action on Saturday afternoon at Orr Rink.
The Jeffs completed the two-game sweep of their conference foe and improved to 8-2-2 overall and 5-0-1 in league play. Colby falls to 4-6-1 on the season and 2-4-0 in the conference following its 10th straight loss to the Jeffs.
Amherst used a strong first period behind goals from Caitlyn Ryan ’17 and Tori Salmon ’15 to earn the win. Ryan scored her first goal of the season on a power play opportunity at the 9:11 mark off an assist from Emily Flom.’15. The assist marked Flom’s fifth of the season.
Salmon’s game-winning goal occurred in the closing minutes of the first period at the 18:42 mark. She was unassisted on the score, marking her team-high sixth of the season.
After a scoreless second period, Colby cut the deficit to one at the 11:58 mark of the third off a goal from Kailey Buxbaum’17, her third on the year. She was assisted by Lauren Guarente ’15.
The Mules pulled their goalie late in the period but were unable to tie the game as the Jeffs earned their fourth straight win of the season, en route to a tie for first place in the NESCAC standings with Middlebury.
Kerri Stuart '14 recorded 14 saves in net for the Jeffs and Colby goalie Brianne Wheeler '14 made 26 stops between the posts.
Amherst returns to the rink on Friday, Jan. 17 and will host Middlebury. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
