Baranek Lifts Jeffs to 4-3 Win Over Hamilton

CLINTON, N.Y. - Courtney Baranek ’14 netted the game winner with just 2:46 left in regulation to lift the Amherst women’s hockey team to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Hamilton College.

Down 2-1 entering the third period, the Jeffs erupted for three scores to notch its first victory of the 2013-14 season.

Baranek led Amherst with three points, assisting on Amherst’s first two goals of the final frame before notching the game winner on a power play. Hamilton’s Gigi Fraser ’14 matched a career high with three points, collecting her first multi-goal game.

Erin Martin ’16 scored the game’s first goal, putting the Jeffs up with 6:45 left in the opening period. Hamilton scored the only two goals of the middle frame, with Fraser contributing to both scores. She converted a pass from Teal Gosselin ’17 3:18 into the stanza to tie the game then assisted on first-year Sara Taffe’s goal 11 minutes later that gave the Continentals their first lead.

Regaining the momentum early in the third, Hayley Opperman ’14 and Lynndy Smith ’17 notched goals just 3:27 apart to put Amherst back on top. Midway through the period, Taffe fed Fraser in front of her own bench, allowing the senior to one-time a shot past Amherst goalkeeper Kerri Stuart’14. Baranek’s power-play game winner came after Hamilton had killed the Jeffs’ first four power-play opportunities, allowing them just three shots in those chances.

Stuart amassed 19 saves in the win, making eight third-period stops including one with 30 seconds left to preserve Amherst’s lead while the Continentals were on a power play and had pulled goaltender Toni Bogen ’14 for an extra attacker. Bogen finished with 19 saves.
Holding a slim 23-22 edge in shots on goal, Amherst was 1-for-5 on its man-up opportunities, while Hamilton converted just one of its seven power play chances.

The two teams conclude their weekend series on Saturday, Nov. 16 at Amherst.
