Jeffs Take Sixth at Tufts Invitational

MEDFORD, Mass. – Jessica Mueller ’13 placed third in the triple jump and the 4x800-meter relay squad of Anna Berglund ’16, Lindsay Ewing ’15, Lexi Sinclair ’16 and Amy Dao ’14 also took third as the Amherst College women’s indoor track and field team placed sixth out of 10 teams at the Tufts Invitational on Saturday.
With 50 points, Amherst trailed second-place Tufts (167.50) and third-place Bates (126) among NESCAC competitors. UMass-Lowell took home the top team honors, edging the host Jumbos with 170.50 points.
Naomi Bates ’14 put forth a strong early effort for Amherst in the 60-meter hurdles, where she finished first among conference competitors and sixth overall in 9.70. In the next women’s event, Abbeh Anderson ’15 turned in the Jeffs’ first top-five finish of the day as her time of 27.22 was good for fifth in the 200 meters. Taylor Summers ’16 won her heat in the same event and placed 10th overall in 27.81.
Amherst’s next top-10 finish came in the 800-meter run where Olivia Tarantino ’15 placed sixth in 2:32.57. Lauren Almeida ’13 also turned in a strong effort in the middle distances, taking fifth in the 1000 meters with a time of 3:04.81.
A trio of Jeffs stuck together and finished strong in the mile, with Dao (5:26.65), Sinclair (5:27.35) and Berglund (5:27.76) placing seventh through ninth, respectively. Jessie Kaliski ’15 turned in Amherst’s top performance in the longer distances, finishing tenth in the 3k with a time of 11:02.24.
The 4x800 team highlighted the Jeffs’ efforts in the relays, finishing behind only the top units of Bates and Tufts with a time of 10:14.65. In the field events, Summers took sixth in the long jump (4.64m) before Mueller’s third-place effort in the triple jump (10.43m) and Bates’ seventh-place performance in the same event (10.10m).
Amherst will be back on the track on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Wesleyan Invitational.
