Jeffs Place Second at Springfield Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Picking up wins in three events, the Amherst women’s track and field team placed second out of 10 teams at the Springfield Invitational.

Williams took the meet’s top honors with 195 points, followed by Amherst (104), Wheaton (79.50), Trinity (75) and host Springfield (73) in the top five. Division II American International came in sixth (60), while Worcester State (50) and UMass-Dartmouth (41) placed seventh and eighth, respectively. Eastern Connecticut State (26.50) and Mount Saint Mary (24) rounded out the field.

Notching one of the Jeffs’ three victories, Karen Blake ’17 narrowly edged out Wheaton’s Francesca Flynn ’16 in the 60-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 7.90, just three one-hundredths of a second ahead of her Lyon counterpart.

Lizzy Briskin ’15 was nearly 52 seconds ahead of her closest competitor in the 5000-meter run, clocking in at 18:07.99, while teammate Betsy Black ’16 took third with a time of 19:26.09. Naomi Bates ’14 logged Amherst’s only other victory, taking the long jump with a mark of 5.80m.

Headlining a strong effort in the mid-distance, Keelin Moehl ’16 finished second in the 600m with a time of 1:41.09. Amherst had four runners in the top-7 of the 800m event, led by Victoria Hensley ’16, who placed third (2:26.13). Sarah Foster ’16 came in fifth (2:29.42), followed by Olivia Tarantino ’15 (2:30.67) and Mary Margaret Stoll ’17 (2:34.61) in sixth and seventh, respectively.

Amy Dao ’14 paced the Jeffs in the 1000-meter run, taking third with a time of 3:04.10. Hannah Herrera ’17 was right behind in fourth (3:05.39), just edging out Kelli Ellingson ’15 (3:06.96). Cat Lowdon ’17 led the charge in the mile, finishing sixth with a time of 5:28.16.

Putting together a solid showing in the pentathlon, Kiana Herold ’17 was fifth in the 60m hurdles (10.24) before tying for first in the high jump (1.60m). She then finished third in the long jump (4.96m) before coming in seventh in the shot put (6.81m). Herold rounded out her run by winning the 800m with a time of 2:34.64.

Amherst returns to action on Friday, Feb. 7 at the Valentine Invitational.
