Blake Sets Record at Valentine Invitational

BOSTON, Mass. – The Amherst women’s indoor track and field team returned to Boston University Friday night to compete in the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in a field consisting of Division I, II and III schools.
Karen Blake ’17 and Naomi Bates ’14 continue to excel during the indoor season. Highlighting the day for the Jeffs, Blake improved on her indoor school record mark in the 200 meter dash, finishing the race in 25.16 seconds to place 21st overall in the 212-person field. Her time is also currently the fastest in all of Division III while Bates finished shortly after, surpassing her fastest mark in the event and placing 25th overall in 25.25 seconds. The two times are the first and second fastest in indoor program history and her mark of 25.25 seconds is third fastest in Division III this season.
The duo also competed in the 400 meter, as Blake paced Amherst with a mark of 58.80 seconds. It was the second fastest school mark behind Bates record time of 58.61 she set earlier this season. The senior finished shortly after Blake on Friday with a mark of 59.44.
In other track events, Keelin Moehl ’16 and Hannah Herrera ’17 competed in the 800 meter. Moehl led the way, finishing in 2:19.78 while Herrera crossed the line shortly after in 2:20.35.
Catherine Lowdon ’17 finished the 1,000 meter run in 3:10.56 and Amy Dao ’14 finished the one mile run in 5:08.81.
In field events, Kiana Herold ’17 competed for the Jeffs and finished in a tie for fifth overall with four others in the high jump. She leaped to 1.65 meters.
Amherst returns to the track next Saturday, Feb. 15 for the Cupid Challenge at Tufts University.
