Amherst Places Ninth at NCAA Indoor Championships

LINCOLN, Neb. – Naomi Bates ’14 added two more All-America laurels to her decorated career as the Amherst women’s indoor track and field team finished ninth overall at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships held at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on the campus of Nebraska Wesleyan University.
The Amherst women recorded its best showing in the indoor national meet since the 2006-07 season when the Jeffs finished seventh overall. On Saturday, Amherst claimed ninth out of 61 teams with 18 points.
Wisconsin-Oshkosh won the championship with 67 points to edge Wisconsin-La Crosse who finished second with 65. Williams was the top NESCAC team, taking fifth with 24 points.
A day after winning the national championship and earning All-America honors in the long jump (5.79 meters), Bates took home two more All-America accolades Saturday in the 60 and 200 meter dash. Setting a program record in the 60 meter preliminaries with a mark of 7.64 seconds, the senior placed sixth overall with the second fastest indoor time in Amherst history in 7.72 seconds.
Bates wasn’t finished yet and took home another sixth-place showing in the 200 meter with a mark of 24.82 seconds, surpassing the school record she broke in the preliminaries (24.97). Teammate Karen Blake ’17 capped off an impressive first-year indoor campaign in the same event and finished ninth with a mark of 25.24.
In field events, another first-year star Kiana Herold finished seventh in the high jump to earn All-America honors, matching her personal-best leap of 1.69 meters.
Amherst prepares for the outdoor season which begins Saturday, Mar. 29 at Tufts.
