Amherst Indoor Track Teams Place Top-Ten at New Englands

BREWSTER/LEWISTON, ME -  The Amherst College indoor track and field teams split up this weekend to compete in the Division III New England Championships. The Lord Jeff men won three events to place fourth in a field of 22 teams on the campus of Bates College, while the Amherst women finished eighth among 25 schools at the University of Southern Maine.

On the men’s side, Amherst took home wins in the 600-meter run, the 5,000-meter run, and the 4x800-meter relay. Sophomore Ben Scheetz (Lancaster, PA) won the 600 with a time of 1:20.92, before Daniel Murner (Crestwood, KY) won the 5,000 for the second straight meet. Amherst won the 4x800 relay with the team of Jimmy Swanson (New Orleans, LA), Steven Corsello (Skaneateles, NY), Scheetz and Kit Callahan (Evanston, IL) turning in a time of 7:55.04.

Amherst stood second on the podium in the distance medley relay with the team of William Bell (Silver Spring, MD), Callahan, Adron Pitmon (Underhill, VT) and Patrick Grimes (Mansfield, MA) finishing in 10:21.89. The Lord Jeff men also placed third in a trio of events, including one field discipline. Junior Thebe Tsatsimpe (Johannesburg, S. Africa) finished third in the long jump with a distance of 6.90 meters.

Also earning third-place points were Corsello in the mile event, and junior Will Yochum (Goleta, CA) in the 3,000-meter run. Corsello turned in a 4:18.42 to take third in the mile, before Yochum registered an 8:37.89 in the 3,000.

At the women’s competition, Amherst’s only win of the day came from Melissa Sullivan (Dallas, TX) in the 800 meter run. Sullivan took home the win with an NCAA provisional time of 2:15.94, before teaming with Eliza Schalch (Bethesda, MD), Lauren Almeida (Reading, MA) and Keri Lambert (Amherst, MA) to finish second in the 4x800 relay with a 9:33.70.

The Lord Jeff women also earned a trio of third-place finishes at the meet, all coming in the distance disciplines. Ali Simeone (Stoneham, MA) placed third in the 5,000-meter run with an 18:06.64, Sophia Galleher (Denver, CO) placed third in the 3k with a 10:24.93, and Hoiwan Cheung (Hanover, NH) took third in the 1,000-meter with a 3:02.29.

Also earning points for Amherst were Mary Doris Reggie (Crowley, LA) and Susan Wasserman (Brooklyn, NY) in the 600-meter run. Reggie’s time of 1:39.41 was good enough for fourth place, while Wasserman placed sixth with a 1:39.83.

Next weekend the two teams will travel to Boston University for a two-day Open New England Championships against opponents from Divisions I, II and III.
