Amherst Women Place Third at Brandeis; Men Fifth

WALTHAM, MA – The Amherst College indoor track and field teams took part in their first scoring meet of the winter season Saturday afternoon at the Brandeis University Reggie Poyau Track Meet. The Lord Jeff women placed third in a field of nine teams, while the men finished fifth in a field of 10.

The Amherst women placed first in three events on the day. In the 5,000-meter run, senior Liz Dalton (Wayne, PA) put in a solid time of 18:34.95 to finish nearly 17 seconds ahead of the second-place runner. Senior Zandra Walton (Skaneateles, NY) and junior Sophia Galleher (Denver, CO) finished one-two in the 3,000-meter run with times of 10:30.24 and 10:33.09, respectively.

Picking up Amherst’s third victory was the 4x400 relay team of Dalton, senior Mattie Baker (Brighton, IL), junior Hoiwan Cheung (Hanover, NH) and junior Caroline Darmody (Coral Gables, FL). The Lord Jeff team picked up 10 points with its time of 4:08.26, which was 1.01 seconds faster than the team from Bates.

Rounding out the Amherst runners who placed in the top three were Cheung and senior tri-captain Carly Levenson (Richmond, VA). Cheung placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:25.89, while Levenson’s mark of 3:07.60 in the 1,000-meter run earned her third place.

The Lord Jeff men took home first place in four events. Junior Dan Murner (Crestwood, KY) finished more than seven seconds ahead of his competition in the 5k, crossing the line in 15:19.74. Sophomore John McGrail (Arlington, VA) gave his team 10 points with his time of 8:45.67 in the 3k.

Sophomore Steve Corsello (Skaneateles, NY) and senior Steve Stewart (Hartford, CT) had the top two times in the 800-meter run, as Corsello took home first place with his time of 1:59.41. First-year Ben Scheetz (Lancaster, PA) was just as impressive in the 600-meter run, finishing more than two seconds ahead of the runner-up with his mark of 1:24.89.

Also faring well on Saturday was sophomore Tommy Moore (Marlborough, MA), whose time of 51.50 in the 400-meter dash left him just 0.25 behind the winner. Junior William Bell (Silver Spring, MD) placed third in a pair of events, as he ran the mile in 4:23.14 and the 1,000-meter run in 2:36.77. Junior Jimmy Swanson (New Orleans, LA) was right behind Bell in the mile with a time of 4:24.01.

The Lord Jeffs return to action Saturday, Jan. 31, when they head to Tufts University.
