Amherst Women Finish Second at Tufts; Men Fourth
Senior Zandra Walton won the 800-meter run and was part of the winning distance medley team.
On the women’s side, the Lord Jeffs’ 153 points were second to only the host Jumbos, who took home first place with 245 points. Amherst’s two most impressive events were the 800- and 5,000-meter run, which accounted for 57 of the team’s points. The Jeffs took the top five times in the 800, with senior Zandra Walton (Skaneateles, NY) leading the pack at 2:22.63, finishing ahead of teammates Molly Priedman (Wayzata, MN), Carly Levenson (Richmond, VA), Mary Doris Reggie (Crowley, LA) and Susan Wasserman (Brooklyn, NY).
In the 5k, senior tri-captain Elise Tropiano (Plainview, NY) easily took home first place with a time of 17:47.71, with junior Sophia Galleher (Denver, CO) and sophomore Hallie Schwab (Stone Ridge, NY) placing second (18:15.35) and third (18:17.32), respectively.
Wasserman, Priedman, Reggie and Levenson added another Amherst victory when they teamed up to win the 4x400 relay in a time of 4:10.07. First-years Eliza Schalch (Bethesda, MD) and Melissa Sullivan (Dallas, TX) joined Walton and fellow senior Kate Silverman (Montclair, NJ) to win the distance medley in 12:58.84, marking the Jeffs’ final win of the afternoon.
Amherst also performed well in the 200- and 400-meter dash events to rack up another 17 points, while the 1,000- and 3,000-meter races featured seven more Jeffs who placed in the top eight to pick up significant points.
First-year Jordan Roehl (Portales, NM) had an impressive day in the throwing events. After her 11.64-meter performance in the shot put earned her second place and qualified her for the ECAC Championships, Roehl placed sixth in the weight throw (12.06 meters) to earn another three points for her team.
Junior Jimmy Swanson won the 1,000-meter run and was part of the third-place distance medley team.
Junior Jimmy Swanson (New Orleans, LA) and sophomore Steve Corsello (Skaneateles, NY) marked the second Lord Jeff tandem to finish one-two, as they led the pack in the 1,000 with times of 2:33.78 and 2:34.17, respectively. Senior Peter Foote (Shelburne, VT) rounded out the Amherst winners with a time of 15:15.89 in the 5k, with sophomore Will Yochum (Goleta, CA) close behind at 15:17.77 in second place. Junior Dan Murner (Crestwood, KY) nearly took home the victory in the 3k, but he was edged by less than one second by Brian Murtagh of Connecticut College.
The Jeffs’ relay teams were also successful, with the 4x400 group placing second and the distance medley team finishing third. Swanson, Stewart, Scheetz and Corsello made up the medley team, while Moore, sophomore Ryan Drost (New Milford, CT), sophomore Andre Gary (Exeter, NH) and first-year Chris Erickson (Concord, MA) teamed up in the relay to finish with a time of 3:35.42.
