AMHERST, Mass. - Senior Ben Scheetz (Lancaster, Pa.) set a new Division III record in the 800-meter run to lead the Amherst men’s indoor track & field team at the Open New England Championships hosted by Boston University.
Leading for the first 750 meters, Scheetz was overtaken by Southern Connecticut State University’s Selasi Lumax '12 down the stretch, finishing second with a DIII record time of 1:47.43.
Last season, Scheetz, already the program’s record holder in the 400, 500, 600 and 800-meter events, became just the second Lord Jeff to capture a national title, winning the 800m at the NCAA indoor meet with a time of 1:51.26.
Also putting forth an impressive showing was junior Pat Grimes (Mansfield, Mass.), who turned in a personal record time of 4:10.10 in the mile run. With one of the fastest DIII times this season, Grimes led through the first 1200m before eventually placing 11th in a field of 27 Division I, II and III runners.
Junior Andrew Erskine (Stamford, Conn.) and first-year KC Fussell (Monson, Mass.) led the Jeffs in the 5000-meter run, finishing 14th (15:02.92) and 20th (15:13.33), respectively, while Dillon Buckley ’13 (Wilmington, Del.) crossed the tape in 15:16.67.
Despite narrowly missing out on qualifying for the 800m, Matt Melton ’14 (Wall, N.J.) posted a personal record in Friday night’s preliminaries with a time of 1:52.04.
UConn took home the top team honors with 118.50 points, followed by Rhode Island (94), Southern Conn. St. (71), CCSU (55.50) and UMass-Lowell (49) in the top five. American International placed sixth (43), with Sacred Heart (34), Stonehill (33) and Northeastern coming in seventh, eighth and ninth. Host Boston University rounded out the top 10 with 26 points.
Amherst, which placed 20th out of 34 teams with eight points, returns to action on Mar. 2-3 at the ECAC Championships.
