Amherst Competes at Valentine Invitational

MeltonBOSTON, Univ. – Matt Melton ’14 finished second overall in the 500 meter dash to highlight the day for the Amherst men’s indoor track and field team at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University.

Melton excelled in the 500 meter, finishing second overall in an 80-person field consisting of athletes from Division I, II and III schools. The senior finished the event with an impressive mark of 1:03.26. Also competing in the event for Amherst were Nick Codola ’15 and Jamie Sandel ’17. Codola finished in 1:07.24 followed by Sandel in 1:07.70.

In other events, sophomore Brent Harrison led Amherst in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:54.99. 

Several Jeffs competed in the 200 meter dash. Pacing the squad was Mark Cort ’15 with a time of 23.14 and finishing shortly after was Josh Young ’17 with a time of 23.28. Dennis Kennelly ’16, Javier Paulino ’14 and Tom Matthew ’16 also participated and finished in 23.62, 23.86 and 23.96, respectively.

In distance events, Dan Crowley ’16 led the way for Amherst in the one mile run, finishing in 4:17.67 while Jeff Seelaus ’16 crossed the line in 4:19.54.

Romey Sklar ’15 finished 24th in the 1,000 meter run, pacing the Jeffs with a mark of 2:30.53. Placing shorty after with a mark of 2:32.15, good for 37th overall, was Lucas Lebovitz ’15. In the 3,000 meter run, Greg Turissini '15 finished 24th overall with a time of 8:19.50.

Rounding out the top performances for Amherst in track events was the 4x400 meter relay ‘A’ team of Codola, Harrison, Judd Liebman ’16 and Melton. The quartet finished 17th in the 54-team field with a time of 3:21.71.

The Jeffs had strong performances in field events, led by Khalil Flemming ’16 who finished 11th in the triple jump (13.48m). Teammate Stephen Hetterich ’15 claimed 20th with a distance of 12.83m.

In the long jump, Cort led all Jeffs with a distance of 6.37 meters while Flemming finished with a mark 6.07m and Hetterich placed with a leap of 5.84m.

The Jeffs return to the track next Saturday, Feb. 15 for the Tufts Cupid Challenge.
