Jeffs Put Forth Strong Showing at Tufts Invitational

BOSTON, Mass. - Behind several strong performances, the Amherst men’s track & field team put together a solid showing at Tufts University’s Cupid Invitational.
Finishing just under a second behind Coast Guard’s Jordan Lee, Matt Melton ’14 was the runner-up in the 600-meter run, crossing the finish line in 1:22.74. Alex Durkee ’15 came in ninth in the event with a time of 1:24.66, while Judd Liebman placed 11th (1:24.89).
Pacing the Jeffs in the 800-meter run, Romey Sklar ’15 clocked in at 1:57.82, good for fifth overall. Nick Codola ’15 was seventh with a time of 1:59.08, while three different Amherst runners placed in the top-15 in the 1000-meter run. Greg Turissini ’15 led the Purple & White in fourth with a time of 2:33.47, while Jesse Fajnzylber ’17 and Kevin Connors ’17 were 11th and 12th, respectively, with times of 2:37.29 and 2:37.49.
Brent Harrison ’16 led Amherst in the 400-meter dash, placing eighth with a time of 51.68, while Connors was the fastest Jeff harrier in the mile run, coming in seventh (4:26.74). Posting a second-place showing in the 3000-meter run, Dan Crowley ’16 recorded a time of 8:36.49, while Jeff Seelaus ’16 was sixth (8:41.44).
Leading a pack of three Amherst competitors in the top-six of the 5000-meter run, KC Fussell ’15 finished second with a time of 15:08.78. Ben Fiedler ’17 came in fifth (15:24.00), while Raymond Meijer ’17 was sixth with a time of 15:25.72.
In the field events, Mark Cort ’15 finished third in the long jump (6.49m), while Khalil Flemming ’16 turned in a fourth-place showing in the triple jump (13.51m). Teammate Steven Hetterich ’15 finished sixth in the event with a leap of 13.10m.
Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 22 at the New England Division III Championships hosted by Boston University.
