Jeffs Compete at NEICAAA Championships

BOSTON, Mass. - Matt Melton ’14 placed third in the 400-meter dash to lead the Amherst men’s and women’s track & field teams at the 2014 NEICAAA Championships hosted by Boston University.
Posting the second fastest qualifying time during the preliminary heats (48.40), Melton clocked in at 47.91, finishing third overall in the event thanks to the fastest Division III 400m time of the season.
Three Jeffs qualified for the finals of the 3000-meter run, led by Dan Crowley ’16, who placed 12th overall in a field of Division I, II and III harriers with a time of 8:35.79. Fellow sophomore Jeff Seelaus ’16 came in 20th with a time of 8:40.99, while Greg Turissini ’15 finished 27th (8:53.10).
Romey Sklar ’15 led Amherst in the mile run, placing 16th overall with a time of 4:15.69, while the distance medley relay team of Lucas Lebovitz ’15, Jamie Sandel ’17, Jesse Fajnzylber ’17 and Kevin Connors ’17 came in 13th with a time of 10:20.03.
On the women’s side, Amy Dao ’14 was the lone Jeff to run in a final heat, finishing 18th overall in the mile run with a time of 5:05.32. During preliminary action, Naomi Bates ’14 posted Division III’s eighth-fastest time in the 200m dash this season, clocking in at 25.10. Teammate Karen Blake ’17 also impressed with a time of 25.35. Hannah Herrera ’17 was 14th (2:18.59), in the 800m prelims, while Kelli Ellingson ’15 turned in a prelim time of 3:03.99 in the 1000m.
As a team, the Jeff men placed 27th out of 37 teams with six points. The Amherst women did not factor into the team scoring. Southern Connecticut State took home the top prize in the men’s meet with 118 points, followed by Rhode Island (99), Northeastern (96), New Hampshire (42) and Stonehill (33) in the top five.
