Amherst Squash Teams Sweep Colby and Hobart-William Smith

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men’s and women’s squash teams continued play in the Mount Holyoke-Smith Invitational Tournament once again this afternoon, playing host to Colby College in the morning, and Hobart-William Smith in the afternoon. Against Colby, the Lord Jeff women won 7-2 while the Amherst men pulled out a 5-4 win. In the nightcap, the Amherst women beat William Smith 9-0 while the Lord Jeff men topped Hobart 8-1.

In the Colby match, Amherst rookie Chandler Lusardi (New York, NY) pulled out an impressive 3-1 win over Kate Pistel in the number two match. After winning the first two games 11-7 and 11-8, Lusardi was edged by Pistel 13-11 in a hard-fought third game. Lusardi did not let her Colby counterpart tie the match up, and instead closed out the win 11-7.

Perhaps the best match of the Amherst-Colby men’s bout was between Lord Jeff Nick Kramer and the White Mules’ Ken Cramer in the number nine spot. Amherst’s Kramer won the first two games 11-7 and 13-11, but Colby’s Cramer responded to take the next three games 11-3, 13-11 and 11-7. The two players with similar last names battled longer than any other pairing, but after winning five of the first eight matches, Amherst held on for the 5-4 team win.

In the second women’s match of the day, Amherst sophomore Kate Savage (Philadelphia, PA) edged Heron Kate Mullen at number three in the best individual showdown. After losing the first and third games, and winning the second, Savage was staring at a potential loss to Mullen. In the fourth game, Savage rolled to an 11-5 win, before closing out the win in impressive fashion 11-2.

In the Amherst men’s match against Hobart, the best match came from the number nine spot once again. Hobart’s Grant Bercari pulled out a 14-12 win in the first game, before falling to Amherst senior Saahil Sud (Brampton, NJ) 11-9 in the second frame. After Bercari won the third 11-7, Sud responded with a commanding 11-5 win in the fourth game. In the pivotal fifth game, Bercari took the win in extra points 13-11.

Play will continue for Amherst tomorrow when both the men and women take on Hamilton College and Connecticut College. The Hamilton match will start at 9 a.m., with the Conn. College match scheduled for 12 p.m.
