Amherst Wraps Busy Weekend With Wins Over Hamilton and Conn.

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men’s and women’s squash teams wrapped up play at the 2010 Smith-Mt. Holyoke Invitational Tournament this afternoon with home matches against Hamilton College and Connecticut College.  The Amherst women went 5-0 in the tournament for the second straight year, topping Hamilton 8-1 and Conn. 9-0 today, while the Lord Jeff men beat Hamilton and Conn. each 7-2  to post a 4-1 record over the weekend.

After wins on Friday and Saturday over Franklin & Marshall, Colby and William Smith, the Amherst women closed out a perfect sweep this weekend with a pair of wins today. After starting the season with three straight wins, Amherst entered the weekend on a five-match losing skid. This weekend, the women’s team out-scored its opposition 40-5 to improve to 8-5 on the year.

A number of players posted perfect 5-0 individual records this weekend for the Lord Jeffs. Going undefeated for Amherst at number two, was rookie Chandler Lusardi (New York, BY), at number four, Anna Scheidt (Fort Lee, NJ), at number five, Anne Piper (Bronxville, NY), at number six Caitlin Demkin (Warren, NJ) and at number eight, Mary Katherine McNeil (Greenwich, CT). First-year Sarah Nyirjesy (Rydal, PA) was also unbeaten on the weekend.

The Amherst men fell to F&M on Friday night, but rolled off a pair of wins on Saturday and another pair today to improve to 7-5 on the season. Amherst’s current four-match win streak is the longest of the season, as the men’s side started the year with three straight wins before losing five straight matches.

Today, the middle of the Amherst men’s line-up was superb, starting with rookie Charles Loesch-Quintin’s (Philadelphia, PA) play at number two. The rookie won both of his matches today 3-0, setting the tone for the crucial heart of the ladder. Junior Brian Warner (Atlanta, GA) followed suit at number two, winning his matches 3-1 and 3-0. Senior Saahil Sud (Brampton, NJ) also won both his matches today playing at number nine.

Both Amherst teams will have the week off, before heading to play NESCAC archrivals Wesleyan and Williams next weekend a the Little Three Championships.
