Amherst Men Split Saturday's Matches at NESCAC Championship

NESCAC

HARTFORD, CT – The Amherst College men’s squash team kicked off its stint at the NESCAC Championships by posting a 1-1 record Saturday afternoon at Trinity College. The Lord Jeffs will face Bowdoin Sunday at 10:30 a.m. to close out their weekend.

Fifth-seeded Amherst (11-8) began its day with an 8-1 loss to fourth-seeded Middlebury, marking the second time the Lord Jeffs have been defeated by the Panthers this season. Amherst came back later in the afternoon to earn a 7-2 win over eighth-seeded Colby, improving upon the 5-4 victory the Jeffs recorded against the Mules on Jan. 16.

Although seven matchups in the Amherst-Middlebury showdown required more than three games to determine a winner, the Lord Jeffs would get their lone point in the No. 9 spot, where Matt Arnold ’12 (Larchmont, NY) came out on the winning end of a 3-2 marathon. Arnold and Chris Dusin traded games until the Lord Jeff junior took the fifth by a score of 11-7.

The Jeffs would drop the top two matches against Colby but would win the remaining seven, five of which ended after three games. Highlighting the Amherst-Colby bout was the No. 3 matchup that saw Charles Loesch-Quintin ’13 (Philadelphia, PA) come from behind for a 3-2 win. Loesch-Quintin dropped the first and third games before winning the fourth (12-10) and sealing the victory with an 11-4 result in the fifth.
