Lord Jeffs Edge Bowdoin in NESCAC Consolation Match, 5-4

NESCAC

HARTFORD, CT – The fifth-seeded Amherst College men's squash team wrapped up its weekend with a 5-4 win over sixth-seeded Bowdoin College Sunday morning in the NESCAC Championship consolation bracket.

The Lord Jeffs improve to 12-8 overall with their 2-1 showing at the conference tournament. They will return to action Friday, Feb. 25, when they head to Harvard University to compete in the College Squash Association’s three-day National Team Championships (Howe Cup).

Eight of Sunday’s nine individual matches resulted in a 3-0 score, but it was Amherst that came out on top to defeat Bowdoin for the second time this season. The bottom of the lineup came through for the Lord Jeffs, who won at numbers two, six, seven, eight and nine. Matt Arnold ’12 (Larchmont, NY) finished the weekend at a perfect 3-0 thanks to his 11-4, 11-2, 11-7 win over Bowdoin’s Will Winmill.

The only Lord Jeff to win in the top of the lineup was Brian Warner ’11 (Atlanta, GA), who had little trouble with his opponent at No. 2 (11-7, 11-5, 11-4). Accounting for Amherst’s other three points were Steve Severson ’12 (Mercer Island, WA), David Kerr ’14 (Short Hills, NJ) and Todd Lavine ’12 (Atherton, CA), who earned wins at No. 6, No. 7 and No. 8, respectively.

Ranked 18th in the most recent CSA national poll, Amherst will likely compete in the C Division (teams ranked 17-24) at the national championships for a second consecutive year.
