BELMONT, MA – Having defeated Bowdoin College twice earlier in the season, Amherst College could not pull off win number three as the Polar Bears earned a 5-4 victory over the Lord Jeffs Saturday afternoon at the Men’s Squash National Championship. Amherst will take on Wesleyan University Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in the Summers Cup (C Division) 19-20 playoff match.

The 19th-ranked Polar Bears won the top four matches and added a fifth victory at number six to move the 18th-ranked Lord Jeffs’ record to 13-9 on the year. Bowdoin advances to take on 17th-ranked George Washington University Sunday at noon for the Summers Cup Title, while the Jeffs and Cardinals will square off at Belmont Hill.

Three of the pairings required five games to a determine a winner, two of which were won by Bowdoin. Will Fantini edged Amherst’s Kevin Cecala ’11 (Wilmington, DE) at No. 3, Steve Severson ’12 (Mercer Island, WA) came from behind to beat Bowdoin’s Andrew Hilboldt at No. 5, and Rahul Madan picked up a big point against Amherst senior Tom Rapisarda (New York, NY) at No. 6 to round out the 3-2 matches.

Accounting for Amherst’s other three points were David Kerr ’14 (Short Hills, NJ), Todd Lavine ’12 (Atherton, CA) and Matt Arnold ’12 (Larchmont, NY), who earned 3-0 wins at numbers seven, eight and nine, respectively. Lavine’s victory was particularly impressive, as he edged Bowdoin’s Andrew Sprague in three close games, 11-9, 12-10, 12-10.
