BOSTON, MA – The Amherst College men’s squash team wrapped up its season Sunday afternoon with a 7-2 win over Wesleyan University in the CSA National Team Championships at Northeastern University. The Lord Jeffs close the year with a 14-9 record and will finish 19th in the national rankings.

Amherst began its weekend with an 8-1 win over Stanford in the Summers Cup (C Division) opening round, but the Jeffs dropped into the consolation bracket with a 5-4 loss to Bowdoin the next day. Wesleyan—ranked 21st—upset 20th-ranked Columbia on Friday before being edged by No. 17 Columbia, 5-4, yesterday.

In Sunday's rematch of the Jan. 29 Little Three meeting that saw Amherst earn an 8-1 win over Wesleyan, the Lord Jeffs dropped the No. 1 and No. 2 matchups but would win the remaining seven. Five of Amherst’s players earned victories of 3-0, while Steve Severson ’12 (Mercer Island, WA) picked up a 3-2 win over Jeff Berman at No. 5.

Severson posted a 3-0 record over the weekend to finish at 14-5 for the season, marking the highest winning percentage on the team. Also going 3-0 at the national championships were David Kerr ’14 (Short Hills, NJ), Todd Lavine ’12 (Atherton, CA) and Matt Arnold ’12 (Larchmont, NY). Arnold finishes his season with a 16-7 record as the team’s leader in wins, while Lavine and Kerr each improved to 14-9.

The Lord Jeffs’ 14 wins are the most since the 1996-97 team finished at 14-4. The Cardinals (14-12) set a program record for wins in a season, marking their first winning campaign since 2000-01.

Select members of the Amherst team will return to action next weekend for the CSA Individual National Championships, which will take place at Dartmouth College.
