Lord Jeffs Wrap Up Play at CSA National Team Championships

CAMBRIDGE, MA – The Amherst College men’s squash team concluded its 2007-08 season by posting a 1-2 record at the CSA National Team Championships at Harvard University. The 17th-ranked Lord Jeffs kicked off their weekend with a 9-0 loss to seventh-ranked Rochester on Friday before dropping a close match to 12th-ranked Bowdoin on Saturday, 5-4. Amherst ended the weekend on a high note, however, defeating 14th-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Sunday by a 6-3 margin.

Amherst competed in the Hoehn Division with Rochester, Bowdoin, Bates, Franklin & Marshall, Brown, Cornell and Navy. The Jeffs were unable to steal a game from Rochester on Friday in the teams’ first match-up of the season, which set up a rematch between Amherst and Bowdoin in the losers’ bracket. The Polar Bears had earned a 7-2 victory over the Jeffs earlier in the season at the NESCAC Championships, but Saturday’s match was much closer. Amherst’s top three players managed wins in their respective matches, but Bowdoin came out on top by winning five of nine matches.

Franklin & Marshall had defeated Amherst earlier in the season at the Yale Invitational by a 6-3 margin, but the Jeffs were able to turn the tables and end the weekend with a 6-3 upset over the 14th-ranked team in the nation. The win was Amherst’s 10th of the season, as the Jeffs conclude team competition at 10-11 overall and will split up for the CSA Individual Championships beginning Friday, Feb. 29 at Navy.

Amherst’s junior class shined over the weekend, as Drew Blacker (Summit, NJ), Jerome Giovinazzo (Staten Island, NY) and Ben Bishop (Seattle, WA) were the lone Jeffs to win two matches during the three-day event, as each player picked up victories over his respective Bowdoin and Franklin & Marshall opponents. Giovinazzo and Bishop each nearly went a perfect 3-0, but they both lost tough 3-2 matches to their Rochester opponents on Friday.
